Jim Henson net worth: Jim Henson was an American puppeteer, screenwriter, film director and producer who had a net worth of $20 million. Born on September 24th 1936 in Greenville, Mississippi, Henson was raised in Maryland, where he also acquired his higher education at the University of Maryland, College Park. As a freshman, he created Sam and Friends (1955), but he has never thought that he would make a name of himself in puppetry. It was the popularity of the show that changed his mind and encouraged him to work on numerous commercials, developing the signature humor that Henson Productions is known for. Before creating the revolutionary educational show "Sesame Street" in 1969, he has already completed several projects including "The Jimmy Dean Show" (1963) and "Time Piece" (1965). But it was the smash hit Sesame Street that made Henson shot to prominence. Unfortunately, this show led to Henson being typecast only as kid's entertainer. Looking for a way to prove everyone wrong Henson joined the initial crew of "Saturday Night Live" in 1975. However, it was the sophisticated humor of "The Muppet Show" in 1976 that helped him prove his point. The show initially had hard times both in the ratings and in the search for guest stars, but in the second season it became a massive hit and eventually turned into the most widely watched series in TV history. Hungry for new challenges, he went on creating "The Muppet Movie" in 1979, the moody fantasy "The Dark Crystal" 1982, and the fantasy series "Fraggle Rock" in 1983. He also co-created with Michael Jacobs the TV show "Dinosaurs" during his final years, when he also created "The Storyteller" in 1988. In addition to the above, he was an Oscar-nominated film director, Emmy Award-winning television producer, and the founder of The Jim Henson Company, the Jim Henson Foundation, and Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Henson died on on May 16, 1990, of organ failure due to a Group A streptococcal infection caused by Streptococcus pyogenes. Posthumously, he won the Disney Legends Award.
