Also known as "The Crocodile Hunter", he acquired international popularity thanks to the show "The Crocodile Hunter", which he hosted with his wife Terri. Steve Irwin was born in 1962 in Melbourne, Victoria, but he spent part of his late childhood in Queensland where he settled with his parents in 1970. His father was the founder of Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park, a small conservation park where young Steve lived among crocodiles and other reptiles. His herpetologist father initiated him in the handling of crocodiles at the early age of nine. Irwin took over his parents´ park in 1991 and renamed it Australia Zoo in 1992. It was during a visit to the zoo that he met his wife Terri Raines, an American naturalist. When interviewed, they say it was love at first sight. Terri describes her sight of Steve as a one-of-a-kind man, an environmental Tarzan. They had two kids, Bindi Sue and Robert Clarence.
