Many of his gambles paid off, including his investment in the very successful venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. He is the former owner of the PPG Palace in Pittsburgh. His father launched The Hillman Foundation in the early 50s, and he began expanding it in the mid-60s.
