The son of Greek immigrants, he was born on September 7, 1948 in Nisyros, Greece, and spent his entire life in the United States. After he acquired a degree in electrical engineering from New York University, he opened a single grocery store that later has become the Red Apple Group empire. Today, the group controls New York's Gristedes supermarkets and 800,000 square feet of city real estate, as well as it has holdings in aviation and holds real estate interests in New York, Florida, and the US Virgin Islands.
