Michael Phelps has had a very good week. Not only did he become the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time, when he won his 19th medal earlier this week, (he has since won two more) he also apparently sold his townhouse. The 6 foot 4 inch swimmer, grew up in a family of swimmers, and began taking swimming lessons when he was in elementary school. He was immediately successful, and earned his first trip to the Olympics when he was just 15 years old. He was the youngest male to make the U.S. Olympic swim team since 1932. Though he didn’t medal at his first Olympics, he broke his first world record less than year later, becoming the youngest man to ever break a swimming world record. From then on, he began his rise to total swimming domination. Since then, between four World Championships, three Pan-Pacific Games, and the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Olympics, he has won 55 Gold Medals, 11 Silver Medals, and three Bronze Medals. He has also broken a ridiculous number of world records, and has often re-broken his own. He has stated that this Olympics will be his last, and there are a probably a lot of swimmers who are secretly heaving a sigh of relief. His swimming success led to a number of lucrative endorsements, which allowed him to purchase a rather nice home. He put it on the market in March for just under $1.5 million, and somebody may have snapped it up, just as he was making Olympic history.
Michael Phelps’ house in Baltimore is 4,000 square feet, and contains three bedrooms and three bathrooms. It is an uber-modern condo overlooking the water in the posh Fells Point community, and features hardwood floors, high ceilings, massive windows, a balcony, exposed brick walls, and a very cool metal staircase. Michael Phelps’ house seems a bit more uptight than Mr. Phelps himself, which may be part of the reason he is interested in selling it. Whatever the reason, whoever purchases it will have some serious bragging rights. You have to admit, it would be pretty cool to say that you live in Michael Phelps’ house.
